Phase 1 – Patagonia 2017

Phase 1 – Patagonia 2017

As many of you know our expedition to Patagonia will take place over a 6 week period, Christmas and New Year 2017.

Our expedition is split down into four phases, acclimatisation, the community project, trekking, and of course some R and R.

The first phase, although titled acclimatisation, is just to catch up on our sleep after a long flight and travel period. At this point, we will not have any altitude to acclimatise to, that will come later in the trekking. We will spend a few days in Santiago getting our bearings, sightseeing, meeting Chilean Scouts, and most importantly stocking up on essentials and food items for our trekking phase.

Santiago will give the participants a taste of the big city, whilst Chile is sparsely populated, over 40% of Chileans call Santiago home. ‘It’s a wonderful place for strolling, and each neighbourhood has its unique flavour and tone, with many gardens, museums and attractions to see. With a growing economy, renovated arts scene and plenty of eccentricity to spare, Santiago is an old-guard city on the cusp of a modern-day renaissance.’

Some Useful Spanish Phrases…

Some Useful Spanish Phrases…

With over 427 million speakers all around the world, an official language on four continents, and spoken in over 31 counties, Spanish is the most popular second language. It is the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world, only English, Hindi and Mandarin have more speakers. With the sheer number of Spanish speakers and the fact our expedition will take us to a Spanish speaking continent, we thought we would share with you some useful Spanish phrases that might come in handy.

chalkboard

Good morning – Buenos días (bway nos  dee ahs)

Good afternoon – Buenas tardes (bway nahs  tar days)

Good evening – Buenas noches (bway nahs  noh chayss)

Cómo está? (coh moh  es tah) is “how are you?” if you don’t know someone and ¿Cómo estás? (coh moh  es tahs) if you do know them.

If they ask you how you are, you can say “good, thank you” – “bien, gracias” (bee ayn, grah cee ahs) because you, too, are a polite person.

Don’t ever forget:

Please – Por favor (por  fah vohr) – and

Thank you –Gracias (grah cee ahs).

These are VERY IMPORTANT words in Spanish.

When you are introduced to someone, you say “Mucho gusto” (moo choh goos toh) and they will say the same thing back to you.  It means, “nice to meet you.”

¿Habla inglés? (ahblah  een glays)? – Do you speak English?  While it is never correct to assume that someone speaks English, you can ask if they do and they will like you so much better for asking in Spanish.

And finally Que tenga un buen día!

If your Spanish is a lot better than ours, and our expedition sounds like something that you would be interested in like anything you would be interested in… Why not join us on our expedition?!

Chief Scout Gold Award- What’s Your Next Challenge?

Chief Scout Gold Award- What’s Your Next Challenge?

The Chief Scout’s Gold Award is the highest award that you can achieve in the scout section. It is a difficult badge to earn, and to do so you must complete a number of challenges – including learning about the world, teamwork, and adventure. The young people that have earned this award have shown great resilience, commitment, and determination, and  should all be rightfully proud of their achievements.

gol

To complete the award, each participant must achieve 6 or more of these nine elements.

* World Challenge Award * Skills Challenge Award *Creative Challenge Award *Outdoors Challenge Award *Adventure Challenge Award *Expedition Challenge Award *Teamwork Challenge Award *Team Leader Challenge Award *Personal Challenge Award

At face value they all seem like separate elements, which in a sense they are, but, if looked at another way, they are all interlinked, and it can be hard to achieve one, without the addition of another supporting you.

Just like this award, our expedition is made up of many elements, as a team we will work together, encounter personal challenges, learn new skills, face the world and experience new cultures and traditions.

Scouting is a powerful force in shaping young people and empowering them to identify and realise their ambitions. Through an expedition, fears are conquered, friendships are strengthened, new relationships are built, unforgettable stories are written, character is revealed, potential is fulfilled and confidence soars! (We can give you another 20 reasons if you’d like!)

So why not take your Scouting adventure further? Hampshire Scout Expeditions have 30 years+ experience in running expeditions abroad, and we are looking for some enthusiastic young adventures to come on our next 6 week expedition over Christmas/New Year 2017/18 to Patagonia.

For all those interested, information will be sent out shortly about our expedition, keep an eye out in the bi-monthly Hampshire Scout News, the weekly E-News and of course the blog and Facebook.

If this sounds like anything you would be interested in, if anyone has any questions, would like some more information, or are interested in the expedition, please contact us;
